You know how two weeks ago I mentioned that sometimes proper time management isn’t enough to get everything done if you have too many responsibilities at once? This was one of those weeks for me. That’s why this post is a day late, but hey, I’m here, and I’m dedicated to finishing what I started. However, due to the lack of time in my schedule, this will be my last post in the Adventures of Time Management series. For my grand finale, I will be discussing the importance of planning and what I have learned from my life this week. Planning is an important part of managing time. Some people plan their day-to-day activities every morning, while some plan them a week in advance. Some people don’t plan at all. Personally, I prefer planning week by week, because oftentimes that’s the only way I can get everything done. The reason I lost control of my schedule this week is because I forgot how much I had to do and didn’t plan ahead as thoroughly as I should have. I opted to goof off on the computer all weekend instead. Don’t do that, guys. Don’t be like me. Mark events on your calendar. Set reminders. Make sure you’re well aware of any changes in your daily routine before they arrive. Once someone gets settled into their daily habits, it’s easy to forget little changes like meetings with an advisor or bake sales with an organization. When a person forgets about these little details, they think they have more time to get things done than they actually do, and then when they remember those little changes, suddenly they’re scrambling to finish all their projects on time. By planning your schedule week by week, those surprises can’t sneak up on you and you have time to plan around them. If you really needed to, you could even plan month by month, although I find that it’s a bit hard to see that far into the future.
On top of planning and setting aside time for responsibilities you already have, it’s also important to reserve time for potential emergencies or other unexpected situations that may come up. Perhaps your sink breaks and you need to schedule an appointment with the plumber as soon as possible. Maybe a family member has to go to the hospital and you want to visit them. It’s hard to just drop everything when an emergency comes up, especially when you don’t have extra time to complete the tasks you couldn’t finish. Plus, if no emergency comes up, that gives you some built-in free time in your schedule, which is also necessary. Having a chance to relax every day is important to maintain one’s sanity and prevent them from burning out and losing motivation. I know as well as the next college student that playing video games or scrolling through Facebook can cause feelings of guilt because you have things to do that really shouldn’t be procrastinated on. However, there is a difference between utilizing your downtime and procrastinating. Although both scenarios involve telling yourself that you can “do it later,” with utilizing downtime, you have an exact time and day in which you plan to get your responsibilities done. In contrast, procrastination does not involve planning for the future; it is simply a string of “I’ll do it later”s until you can’t possibly wait any longer. It’s perfectly fine to relax and goof off despite impending deadlines and looming projects, as long as you do it in moderation and have a plan on how and when to tackle them later.
